Hi everyone, I'm Maria from the RIPE NCC. This chat panel is meant for discussion ONLY. If you have questions for the speaker and you want the session chair to read it out, please write it in the Q&A window also stating your affiliation. Otherwise, you can ask questions using the microphone icon.
Please note that all chat transcripts will be archived and made available to the public at https://ripe88.ripe.net/.

I'm just surprised at how important SNMP is. 😄
Petra Zeidler - 2024-05-21 09:51:42
peanutgallery comment: if you really want to phone the noc the phone won't be working
Jen Linkova - 2024-05-21 09:51:55
@shane - old habits die hard :)
Frank Fiene - 2024-05-21 09:55:37
The PowerPoint from Maria is missing on the website.
Brian Nisbet - 2024-05-21 09:59:52
I mean, I'd also say that NRENs are less likely to dive straight onto hype cycles like LLMs at this point, and we don't want our knowledge bases to start hallucinating...
Petra Zeidler - 2024-05-21 09:59:59
a machine learning analysis tool might me useful, but not primarily a -language- model
Doris Hauser - 2024-05-21 10:00:35
@Frank have you reloaded your browser? I can see Maria's Slides both as a PDF and .pptx file online
Aaron Weintraub - 2024-05-21 10:03:12
It seems very education (NREN/campus) heavy as far as the results go, but I suppose that given the survey sponsor that makes sense. I wonder how the results would change if it was advertised more towards commercial companies
Brian Nisbet - 2024-05-21 10:03:40
Well, it's not just the survey sponsor, Aaron, it's the constituency of the respondents.
Brian Nisbet - 2024-05-21 10:04:21
While the SIG-NOC mailing list is not R&E exclusive or locked, the population of the mailing list and the SIG is overwhelmingly R&E, because that's the core community.
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:08:41
So the routing described is link-based, which means not BGP right?
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:10:06
Ah, OSPF. Right!
Jen Linkova - 2024-05-21 10:11:33
What is "unnecessary ports" and why would anyone pay for them? ;)
Jen Linkova - 2024-05-21 10:13:41
I guess this could be integrated into CSPF for calculating LSPs - but shutting down links is a bit extreme....it would impact convergence..
Aaron Weintraub - 2024-05-21 10:14:31
I always wonder about these sort of presentations if just moving forward one generation in technology gives you enough lower watt/gigabit numbers to offset a lot of these environmental gains
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:14:36
Germany uses too much coal to deserve all those flows. 😉
Jen Linkova - 2024-05-21 10:15:33
I guess running additional calculations also increases the carbon intensity?
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:15:35
Although I guess if that is from moving traffic out of Poland it makes sense, since Poland is even worse in that regard. 😔🤤
Petra Zeidler - 2024-05-21 10:17:25
I wonder if equipment forced obsolescence is on the same order of magnitude as the crbon savings in routing, or worse
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:17:45
Good question @Petra!
Petra Zeidler - 2024-05-21 10:18:02
but I guess that is an unfair question to ask of the presenter
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:18:22
It's fair to ask what consideration there was for hardware.
Marco Moock - 2024-05-21 10:18:25
@Shane In the last year more than 50% was renewable energy, coal is decreasing.

Very weird echo cancelling artefacts when the speaker is responding to questions are audible on the meetecho stream.
Shane Kerr - 2024-05-21 10:20:21
According to that source at least it was more like 30% renewable last year in Poland, and yes it is getting better.
Petra Zeidler - 2024-05-21 10:21:21
it has to be getting better faster, everywhere, unless we plan for more underwarter networks
Brian Nisbet - 2024-05-21 10:21:25
I don't want to think about the ATM node that we found on a client site, where the operator had left it there for... not quite 20 years, but...

This session has now ended. The next session will start at 11:00. More info on the RIPE 88 meeting plan: https://ripe88.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/
Rudolf van der Berg - 2024-05-21 10:22:58
I saw too late that there was a presentation on carbon aware routing... On an IAB mailing list I made some comments about the study https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/e-impact/sscm2EpBBocaYvLq5iDizKzpfr8/
Mike Hughes - 2024-05-21 10:23:49
@brian - the internet is full of these things. I remember finding an SMDS concentrator still on and receiving cells well into the 10GigE era, in somewhere I shall not name to protect the innocent.
Frank Fiene - 2024-05-21 10:35:44
Yes, both pptx and pdf are online now.
Frank Fiene - 2024-05-21 10:36:04
the old link was going to Nirvana.
